About Demetris

Demetris Athienitis is an Associate Instructional Professor and Undergraduate Coordinator in the Department of Statistics at the University of Florida. He earned his Ph.D. in Statistics from the University of Florida in 2011, an M.S. in Statistics from the University of Florida in 2008, and a B.A. in Mathematics and Statistics from Rutgers University in 2005. Following his doctoral studies, Athienitis has held faculty positions at the University of Florida, advancing to his current role. In 2021, he was promoted to Senior Lecturer in the Department of Statistics, reflecting his contributions to teaching and service.

Athienitis's research interests encompass nonparametric and distribution-free statistics, missing data, and linear models. He has published in peer-reviewed journals, including "Distortion Sensitivity of Estimators of Location," co-authored with Ronald Randles in the Journal of Nonparametric Statistics (2013), which investigates the robustness of location estimators under probability distortions. Another publication is "Imidacloprid Uptake and Leaching in the Critical Root Zone of a Florida Entisol under Citrus Production," co-authored with David M. Kadyampakeni, Yu Wang, and Jawwad A. Qureshi in Agrochemicals (2024), applying statistical methods to agrochemical dynamics. As Undergraduate Coordinator, he advises statistics majors, minors, and data science students, and has contributed to curriculum enhancements, such as proposing new courses like STA 4321 Introduction to Probability. Athienitis teaches essential undergraduate courses, including Regression Analysis (STA 4210), Design of Experiments (STA 4211), Sample Survey Design (STA 4222), Introduction to Statistics Theory (STA 4322/5328), and Introduction to Probability (STA 4321/5325). He has also served as faculty sponsor for students in the Undergraduate Statistics Research Project Competition.
