About Deborah

Deborah Bateson AM is Professor of Practice in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney, affiliated with The Daffodil Centre, a joint venture between the university and Cancer Council NSW. She earned her MBBS, MA from the University of Oxford (Oxon), and MSc from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). With over 25 years of experience as a clinician, researcher, educator, and advocate in sexual and reproductive health, she previously served as Medical Director of Family Planning NSW from 2015 to 2022. In this role and beyond, she advanced access to contraception, addressed sexual health needs, and contributed to clinical guidelines and policy. Professor Bateson is an Honorary Fellow of the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Health of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. She was appointed Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the 2023 King's Birthday Honours for significant service to medicine through reproductive and sexual health, public health promotion, and cervical cancer prevention efforts. Additionally, she received the 2024 Cancer Australia Jeannie Ferris Award recognizing her exceptional contributions to cancer prevention.

Professor Bateson's research emphasizes equity and person-centred implementation of evidence-based interventions, particularly human papillomavirus vaccination, cervical screening, and sexual and reproductive health services. As co-lead of the Implementation Science program at The Daffodil Centre, she drives clinical translation and addresses barriers for underserved populations, including projects in Timor-Leste and the Indo-Pacific through the Elimination Partnership for Cervical Cancer (EPICC). Her scholarly impact includes over 3,300 citations across 220 publications. Key works encompass 'Elimination of cervical cancer: ensuring equity' (The Lancet Public Health, 2023), 'Reproductive experiences and outcomes among a representative sample of Australian women' (Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health, 2023), 'The case for integrating sexual and reproductive health services in primary care' (BMJ Sexual & Reproductive Health, 2024), 'Factors associated with pelvic inflammatory disease: A case series from Family Planning NSW clinics' (Women's Health, 2022), and contributions to working with people with intellectual disability on cervical screening (2024). Her international career includes work in the UK, Hong Kong, Borneo, and Tanzania, enhancing global perspectives on reproductive health equity.
