David Woodfield serves as a Teacher at the University of Otago Pathway and English Language Centre, also known as the University of Otago Language Centre or English Language Centre | Te Puna o te Kī. He teaches English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and trains ESOL teachers. His academic background includes a Bachelor of Arts and Diploma in Education from the University of Otago, a Master of Arts from the University of Canterbury, a Master of Education in TESOL from Temple University Japan obtained in 1994, and a Certificate in TESOL from Otago Polytechnic. These qualifications equip him to deliver effective language instruction and teacher training within the centre's programmes, which provide pathways to undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the University of Otago.
In his role, David Woodfield has been a key teacher hosting large online classes from home, particularly popular with Japanese students, as noted in a 2022 University of Otago news release. He has contributed to professional development through presentations at conferences, including 'Reframing the Elementary ESOL Student as Campus Researcher' at the CLESOL 2014 conference and participation in the TESOLANZ Symposium 2023. As the Otago TESOL representative for TESOLANZ, he shared insights on teaching listening in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) classes in a 2025 newsletter alongside colleague Amilcar Oliveira. David Woodfield also created the Otago TESOL Facebook group to connect TESOL professionals and presented on extensive reading and writing at the First Extensive Reading World Congress in Kyoto, Japan in 2011.
