Dr. David Reid serves as Associate Dean (Allied Health) in the School of Medical and Health Sciences at Edith Cowan University, where he is also a registered paramedic. His academic background includes a Doctor of Philosophy from Edith Cowan University (2022), a Bachelor of Science in Paramedical Science from the same institution (2013), a Master of Health Management with Honours from the University of New England (2003), and a Bachelor of Agricultural Economics from the University of Sydney (1995). Additionally, he holds the Australian Institute of Company Directors’ Diploma. Prior to joining ECU, Reid worked in management consulting specializing in healthcare with PricewaterhouseCoopers and a boutique consultancy in Perth. He also served as Director of Performance Review in the Office of the Auditor General (Western Australia). In his paramedic career, he has held front-line operational roles and management positions in emergency management, clinical governance, and resuscitation improvement with St John Ambulance (Western Australia), Ambulance Service of New South Wales, and St John Ambulance (Northern Territory).
Reid’s research specializations encompass pre-hospital paramedicine, emergency management, mass gatherings, aeromedical clinical care and evacuation, and evidence-based competency assessment. His teaching focuses on emergency care, including trauma, prehospital resuscitation, ethics and law, and emergency management. Key publications include "Cardiac arrest events on Australian beaches" (2025, Resuscitation Plus), "Lifesaving cardiopulmonary resuscitation: A pilot evaluation of a targeted educational intervention to improve CPR provision in volunteer surf lifesavers" (2025, Journal of Emergency Medicine), "Calling an ambulance for non-emergency medical situations: Results of a cross-sectional online survey" (2023, Emergency Medicine Australasia), "Profiling the Australasian paramedicine tertiary academic sector and workforce" (2023, Paramedicine), "Preparedness of graduate paramedics for practice: A comparison of Australian and United Kingdom education pathways" (2019, Australasian Journal of Paramedicine), and "Pre-hospital advanced life support resuscitation – A curriculum for pre-hospital education" (2020, Australasian Journal of Paramedicine). He has received grants including the WA Clinical Training Network Simulated Learning Environments Research Grant ($15,000, 2016), Endeavour Grant ($16,000, 2016), and New Colombo Plan funding ($90,000, 2015). Reid serves on Surf Life Saving Australia’s Medical Advisory Committee and the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Healthcare’s Committee for Safety and Quality Standards for Australian Ambulance Services, acts as a competency assessor for the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra), and leads a consortium of five universities providing assessment services to the Paramedicine Board of Australia.
