David Q. Pan serves as Executive Vice Dean and Professor at Schwarzman College, Tsinghua University, where he oversees the daily management of the Schwarzman Scholars program. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Engineering from Tsinghua University after enrolling in 1980 in the Mathematics and Computer Technology Application program. He then pursued advanced studies at Tsinghua University's School of Economics and Management, obtaining a Master's degree in Engineering from the Economics Department and a PhD in Economics from the International Trade and Finance Department, under the supervision of Professor Zhu Rongji. In 1993, he received a Master of Science degree in Engineering Economic Systems from Stanford University's School of Engineering. Prior to his current role, Pan held positions from 1994 to 2004 as engineer, R&D manager, vice president, CEO, and chairman across four IT companies, including co-founding Sunyard Engineering Systems Co. From 2004 to 2014, he directed the Office of Cooperative Development at Tsinghua School of Economics and Management, managing international and domestic collaborations and serving as a researcher at the university's Corporate Governance Research Center.
Pan's research interests encompass enterprise development, corporate governance, Chinese economic history, and the Belt and Road Initiative. He teaches courses in Chinese and English, including Managerial Economics, Corporate Governance, Management Information Systems, History of Chinese and Foreign Enterprise Development, Leading Issues in the Global Economy, and Psychology of Global Leadership. His key publications include Economic Analysis of Modern Shanghai Financial Crisis: 1870-1937 (Tsinghua University Press, 2017), which received the 6th Financial Book Golden Goat Award; China’s Belt and Road Initiative: Changing the Rules of Globalization (Palgrave Macmillan, 2018); Industrial Development Report of Countries along the Belt and Road (China Encyclopedia Publishing House, 2021); and numerous papers such as 'Exploration of Interest Rates on Silver Drafts in Modern Shanghai Money Houses' in Economic Research (2015) and 'Financial Cooperative Potential between China and Belt and Road Countries' in Emerging Markets Finance and Trade (2019). He has received multiple Outstanding Teaching Awards from Tsinghua University and Beijing Normal University, the 17th Tsinghua 'Good Teacher and Friend' Award, and three prizes for scientific and technological progress, including one provincial second prize and two third prizes. As a leader in global leadership education, Pan contributes to fostering cross-cultural understanding and innovative thinking among future leaders through the Schwarzman Scholars program.
