He serves as the Regional Coordinator for Clutha for the Rural Medical Immersion Programme (RMIP), where he supports medical students' immersion in rural practice. Mason graduated with an MBChB from the University of Otago in 1990. His career has been dedicated to general practice and rural medicine, beginning with three years at Waikato Hospital after graduation, where he discovered his passion for general practice.
Following that, he completed a year of GP locum work in Hamilton and then spent seven years in general practice in Paraparaumu. He later moved to his hometown of Blenheim and then to Kaikoura for twelve years, during which he practiced general practice, hospital medicine, and ambulance services. In Kaikoura, he first engaged with the RMIP, introducing students to rural life and practical medicine. Since 2019, after joining Clutha Health, he has been the RMIP Regional Coordinator for Clutha, leveraging his extensive clinical experience to mentor future rural health professionals and contribute to improving rural healthcare delivery in New Zealand.
