Great Professor!
Professor David Emery serves as Professor of Veterinary Immunoparasitology in the Sydney School of Veterinary Science, Faculty of Science, at the University of Sydney. He earned his BVSc and BSc (Vet) from the University of Sydney, followed by a PhD in transplantation immunology and immunopathology at the Australian National University, and holds a DVSc. After veterinary school graduation, he engaged in mixed practice before advancing into research, including work at the International Laboratory for Research on Animal Diseases in Kenya on Theileria and Trypanosoma, where he elucidated immune response mechanisms in cattle recovering from East Coast Fever. Returning to Australia, he joined the CSIRO Division of Animal Health, shifting focus to immunoparasitology of ruminant nematodes. His contributions there included demonstrating immunological mechanisms during trickle infections with Haemonchus contortus and Trichostrongylus colubriformis in neonates, developing animal models for mucosal immunity studies, cytokine assays, and evaluating diverse vaccine delivery systems from recombinant subunits to DNA and live vectors. He also served as program manager in the CRC for Vaccine Technology.
In 2002, Emery joined the University of Sydney's Faculty of Veterinary Science as a senior research fellow, promoted to Associate Professor in 2004 and subsequently to Professor. His research addresses livestock resistance to internal parasites, including Theileria orientalis, Fasciola hepatica, ticks, fleas, and liver fluke, with collaborations involving industry partners like Elanco Animal Health. Key achievements encompass defining arthropod vector roles for Theileria orientalis, demonstrating calf immunization efficacy against oriental theileriosis, and advancing vaccines for gastrointestinal nematodes. He has authored 135 refereed journal papers and 10 book chapters, secured over $A3 million in personal grants, managed exceeding $A10 million in funding, and contributed to three international patents. Notable publications include 'Haemaphysalis longicornis: the life-cycle on dogs and cattle, with confirmation of its vector status for Theileria orientalis in Australia' (2019), 'Haemonchus contortus: the then and now, and where to from here?' (2016), and 'Approaches to Integrated Parasite Management (IPM) for Theileria orientalis with an Emphasis on Immunity' (2021). Emery has supervised 13 postgraduate students, taught undergraduate parasitology and immunology, and held roles as Pro-Dean (2010-2014) and Associate Dean for Research (2009). Within the Australian Society for Parasitology, he was Treasurer (1994-1995), President (2015-2017), and key in producing a veterinary textbook, earning Fellowship in 2022.
