Darren Hart serves as Head of Research and Teaching IT Support within the University of Otago's Information Technology Services, a position he assumed in 2020. He also holds the role of Head of eResearch Support and is listed among the professional staff in the Department of Biochemistry. With more than two decades of experience in the tertiary education sector, Hart's career began as a Research Assistant in Virus Research at the John Innes Centre in Norwich, UK, from 2000 to 2003. In 2003, he relocated to New Zealand to work in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Otago. He transitioned into IT support roles in 2007, focusing on research and teaching technologies. His contributions extend to managing research and teaching equipment, providing computational support, and facilitating eResearch services across the university.
Hart earned a BSc (Hons) in Virology from the University of Warwick. During his tenure in the Biochemistry department, he co-authored several peer-reviewed publications in molecular biology and phycology. Notable works include 'Utility of psbA and nSSU for phylogenetic reconstruction in coralline algae' (2008, Journal of Phycology, cited 140 times), where he contributed from the Department of Biochemistry, University of Otago; 'Ulva, Umbraulva and Gemina: genetic survey of New Zealand green seaweeds' (2009, European Journal of Phycology), acknowledging his assistance with sequencing and phylogenetic analyses; and 'Corallinapetra novaezelandiae gen. et sp. nov. and a reassessment of the genus Johansenpora (Corallinales, Rhodophyta)' (2015, Journal of Phycology, cited 139 times). Earlier, at the John Innes Centre, he co-authored 'Detection of Banana streak virus in field samples of banana from Uganda' (2002, Annals of Applied Biology). Additional contributions include computational support for projects such as genotyping antimicrobial resistance and testing post-sequencing data-processing pipelines like Aozan (2017). In 2018, the School of Biomedical Sciences recognized his impact with the Research Support – Distinguished Contribution award. Hart's work has supported research output in areas like algal phylogenetics, virology, and bioinformatics, amassing citations across platforms including ResearchGate (261 citations for listed works).
