Dr. Danny Toohey serves as Senior Lecturer in the School of Management and Marketing within the Faculty of Business and Law at Curtin University. He is the Course Lead for Business Information Systems programs at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. With a career spanning higher education in Western Australia, Toohey previously held a lecturing position at Murdoch University for nearly 21 years in the Discipline of Information Technology, Mathematics and Statistics. There, he delivered courses in databases, data analysis, business analytics, and related ICT subjects.
Toohey completed his PhD at Murdoch University, focusing his thesis on transnational education and academic job satisfaction, earning the International Education Association of Australia (IEAA) Excellence Award for outstanding postgraduate research. His academic interests lie in teaching and learning enhancement, particularly Transnational Education (TNE) and Learning Analytics. He has co-authored key publications such as 'A Qualitative Study of Satisfaction of IT Academics with Transnational Education' (2016), 'The use of learning analytics to support improvements in teaching practice' (West, Luzeckyj, Searle, Toohey, Price), 'Higher Education Teachers' Experiences with Learning Analytics in Relation to Student Retention' (West et al.), 'A low-cost spectroscopic nutrient management system for hydroponic lettuce' (PLOS ONE, 2024), and 'Development and Testing of an IoT Spectroscopic Nutrient Management System' (Horticulturae, 2023). These works demonstrate his contributions to student retention strategies, institutional analytics, and interdisciplinary applications in agriculture technology.
Toohey's excellence in pedagogy is evidenced by his 2015 Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning from the Australian Awards for University Teaching, recognizing his innovative use of forums, social media, and face-to-face engagement to boost ICT learning outcomes. He has received nominations for additional teaching awards and holds membership as a Senior Member of the Australian Computer Society (MACS Snr), serving on its Professional Development Board. Additionally, he supervises higher degree by research students and has presented on topics like teaching as an HDR student at academic festivals.
