Daniel Sarewitz is an Emeritus Professor of Science and Society in the School for the Future of Innovation in Society at Arizona State University. He serves as Co-Director Emeritus of the Consortium for Science, Policy, and Outcomes (CSPO) and directs CSPO's office in Washington, DC. Sarewitz earned his PhD in geological sciences from Cornell University in 1986. Earlier in his career, from 1989 to 1993, he worked on research and development policy issues as a staff member in the US House of Representatives, where he was the principal speech writer for Committee Chairman George E. Brown, Jr. His expertise spans environmental social science, science policy, technology policy, decision-making, applied ethics, and emerging technologies. Sarewitz has focused his efforts on enhancing CSPO's impact on federal science and technology policy processes and contributing to public dialogue on the social and political dimensions of scientific and technological change.
Sarewitz's research centers on the interplay between science policy decisions, scientific research, and social outcomes. He explores how the organization of scientific inquiry influences the distribution of social benefits from science, the reasons for uneven advances in knowledge addressing human problems, the interactions between scientific uncertainty and human values in decision-making, and how technological innovation shapes politics. Current projects include examining harmonies between science and religion in collaboration with writer Lee Gutkind. He has authored or co-authored key works such as Frontiers of Illusion: Science, Technology, and the Politics of Progress (Temple University Press, 1996), The Techno-Human Condition (MIT Press, 2011, with Braden Allenby), Usable Science: A Handbook for Science Policy Decision Makers (CSPO, 2010), and the article 'Saving Science' (The New Atlantis, 2016). With over 140 publications, Sarewitz edits the magazine Issues in Science and Technology and writes a regular column for Nature. His contributions have advanced the integration of science with societal needs, promoting evidence-based policy-making and improved real-world applications of scientific knowledge.
