About Daniel

Daniel Lin is Professor in Operations and Business Analytics and Department Chair of Operations, Supply Chain Management, and Information Technology Management at the University of San Diego's Knauss School of Business. He earned his Ph.D. in Operations, Technology, and Innovation Management from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2011, with a dissertation on Competitive Supply Chain Strategies in the Retail Sector. Prior to that, he received an M.S. in Management Science and Engineering from Stanford University in 2005 and a B.S. in Industrial Engineering from National Chiao Tung University in 2002. Lin joined the University of San Diego in 2011 as an Assistant Professor in the School of Business Administration, was promoted to Associate Professor in 2017, and to full Professor in 2022. His academic career is marked by progressive leadership roles, including extensive committee service such as chairing task forces on student success, core curriculum revision, and serving on dean search committees, faculty development committees, and the strategic planning steering committee.

Lin's research specializations encompass operations management, supply chain management, business analytics, sustainable product design, blockchain applications in supply chains, fair trade, e-waste recycling, competitive outsourcing, and vertical integration. He has published in leading journals, including 'Are Strategic Customers Bad for a Supply Chain?' (Manufacturing & Service Operations Management, 2018), 'Vertical Integration under Competition: Forward, Backward, or No Integration?' (Production and Operations Management, 2014), 'Designing Sustainable Products under Co-Production Technology' (Manufacturing & Service Operations Management, 2020), 'Choice of E-Waste Recycling Standard under Recovery Channel Competition' (Manufacturing & Service Operations Management, 2020), and 'A Manufacturer’s Responsible Sourcing Strategy: Going Organic or Participating in Fair Trade?' (Annals of Operations Research, 2020). Additional contributions include case studies like 'Taylor Guitars and Blockchain' (Operations Management Education Review, 2019) and book chapters on socially responsible co-product design. His scholarly impact is evidenced by awards such as the Steber Professorship, School of Business Junior Faculty Research Award, Outstanding Review Service Award from Production and Operations Management, and editorial roles on the review boards of Decision Sciences Journal and Production and Operations Management.
