Dr. Daniel Biro serves as a Lecturer in global politics in the School of Society and Culture, part of the College of Education, Behavioural and Social Sciences at Adelaide University. Previously associated with the Justice and Society Unit at the University of South Australia, he is now part of the newly formed Adelaide University. Eligible to supervise Master's and PhD students, Biro is also available for media comment on his areas of expertise. His academic journey began with a Bachelor's degree in Political Science from the National School of Political Science and Public Administration (SNSPA) in Bucharest, Romania. He pursued postgraduate studies in International Relations at SNSPA Romania in 2002 and at the Central European University (CEU) in Hungary in 2002. As a Chevening Scholar, he obtained his M.Sc.Econ in Strategic Studies from Aberystwyth University, United Kingdom, in 2003. Biro completed his PhD in Politics and International Relations at the Australian National University in 2011.
Biro's research specializations include international relations theory, security studies, and comparative politics, broadly encompassing regional security, international interventions, state-building efforts, and the marginalization of states labeled as "rogues" or "failed," as well as non-state actors like warlords. His interests extend to middle power concepts, grand strategy amidst transforming international orders, conflict resolution, peace-building, strategic studies, and overseas development aid. Key publications highlight his contributions to the field: the article "NATO's partnership with countries across the globe: the case of Australia" in the Journal of East European and Asian Studies (2011); the chapter "Warlord governance: transition towards, or coexistence with, the state?" in Warlords, Inc: Black Markets, Broken States, and the Rise of the Warlord Entrepreneur (2015); and in the edited volume Relaţii internaţionale contemporane: teme centrale în politica mondială (2013), chapters "The problematic labeling of 'state-failure' and difficulties of state-building: a radiography of contested concepts and practices" and the "Introduction: From theory of international relations to central themes of global politics." Biro teaches a range of courses, including Research Thesis 1 and 2, Framing the International: Representations of Global Politics, Global Power in the Indo-Pacific Region, Villains, Victims and Outsiders: Marginalisation in World Affairs, and Justice & Society Study Tour.
