Dan Hyson serves as an Associate Professor in the Psychology Department at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, a position he has held since August 2014. Since 2022, he has directed the university's in-person School Psychology graduate program. Before joining academia, Hyson accumulated 13 years of practical experience in Minnesota K-12 schools as a school psychologist. From 2001 to 2007, he provided direct services at Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan Public Schools, followed by seven years (2007-2014) as Data Management Coordinator at Hiawatha Valley Education District in Winona, Minnesota. His academic credentials include a Ph.D. in Child and School Psychology from the University of Minnesota, earned in 2001, and a B.A. in English and French from Amherst College in 1992.
Hyson's scholarly interests center on systems-level data-driven decision making and the links between early elementary teacher-student relationships and student outcomes such as engagement and achievement. His listed specialty areas include equity-minded teaching and school psychology, particularly teacher-student relationships, alternative approaches to behaviorally challenging students, and data-driven practices at the systems level.
