Dan Eversole is an Associate Professor and Extension Beef Scientist in Beef Cattle Management and Animal Nutrition at the School of Animal Sciences, Virginia Tech. He earned a Ph.D. in Ruminant Nutrition from Michigan State University in 1978 and a B.S. in Animal Science from The Ohio State University in 1973. Dr. Eversole has been involved with Virginia Tech's Beef Cattle Center since 1984, serving as Director of Beef Cattle Programs. He also functions as an academic advisor and teaches courses in livestock management, handling, and nutrition, providing hands-on educational experiences for undergraduate students.
His research interests include applied studies on the growth and development of bulls, cow/calf management, feedlot nutrition, and supplementation levels of selenium, copper, and zinc in salt-mineral mixtures for weaned calves, gestating cows, and growing bulls, as well as the effects of trace-mineral supplementation on immune function in beef cattle. Key publications feature 'Effects of feeding supplemental fat to beef cows on cold tolerance in newborn calves' (Dietz et al., Journal of Animal Science, 2003), 'Effects of oral vitamin E supplementation during late gestation in beef cattle in late winter and late summer' (Bass et al., American Journal of Veterinary Research, 2001), and 'Effect of selenium supplementation on colostral IgG concentration in cows grazing selenium-deficient pastures and on postsuckle serum IgG concentration in their calves' (Swecker et al., American Journal of Veterinary Research, 1995). Extension publications include 'Creep Feeding Beef Calves' (2009) and 'Body Condition Scoring Beef Cows' (2009). Dr. Eversole has received the Ohio State University Animal Sciences Hall of Fame (2020), College of Agriculture and Life Sciences UT Prosim Excellence in Service Award (2019), American-International Charolais Association Outstanding Seedstock Producer of the Year (2017), College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Outstanding Faculty Service Award (2015), and Honorary American FFA Degree (2007). His contributions extend to programs like Hokie Harvest livestock sales and All-East Livestock Judging Contest, impacting student training and youth development in the beef industry.
