Dr. Damian Fasolo is a lecturer and researcher in the Screen Production programme within the School of Media and Communication at Murdoch University. A graduate of the university, he completed his Honours degree in Film and Television. Fasolo is a multi-award-winning cinematographer, filmmaker, and producer with substantial professional experience in the screen industry. After graduation, he worked in Sydney and Perth, contributing to music videos, television commercials, documentaries, and television productions for clients including BBC UK, BBC Australia, Seven Perth, ABC, Invasion Films, Market United, Black Russian Productions, Ribosome, McDonalds, the Cancer Foundation, and Homestart. He previously served as Studio Manager at Murdoch University, managing film equipment, demonstrating its use to students, and shooting numerous films to refine his cinematography skills.
Fasolo's notable short film 'The Road Not Taken' (2010), which he directed, follows a young girl reflecting on her painful past and life's diverging paths. It screened at nine festivals worldwide, earned an honorary special mention at the Clare Valley Film Festival, and secured second place at the South Texas International Film Festival. This achievement resulted in an invitation from Oxford University to deliver a paper on the representation of adolescence and adaptations of works of art in contemporary film. Other acclaimed shorts include 'Sol Bunker'. His feature film 'Broken' (2017), loosely based on true events and portraying a couple's marriage breakdown and path to redemption, was produced on a modest $15,000 budget emphasizing minimalistic narrative, characterization, and cinematography; it won an Australia Cinematography Award. More recently, Fasolo worked as cinematographer on 'Survivors of Wadjemup' (2023) directed by Glen Stasiuk and 'Kayamatah'. His accolades include two Gold ACS Awards and four WASA nominations. In scholarship, he co-authored 'Video bloggers as digital auteurs: Casey Neistat and the evolution of auteur theory' published in First Monday (2026). At Murdoch, Fasolo teaches screen production, leveraging his industry background and Murdoch's advanced facilities—including production studios, editing and sound suites, and extensive equipment—to prepare students for professional careers.
