About Cory

Dr. Cory Dugan serves as Research Officer in the School of Human Sciences at The University of Western Australia (UWA) and Research Fellow at Monash University. He completed his PhD in Nutrition and Exercise Physiology from UWA in 2024, with a thesis entitled "Iron and Women's Health: A Multidimensional Exploration of Iron Deficiency, Management, and Treatment in Active Females." His prior degrees include a Bachelor of Science with First Class Honours in Sport Science, Exercise and Health (2019) and a Bachelor of Science in Sport Science, Exercise and Health (2018), both awarded by UWA. Dugan's research focuses on nutrition and exercise physiology, particularly iron metabolism and women's health, including the prevalence, screening, and treatment of iron deficiency and anaemia in active females. He leads the NHMRC-funded DARP Trial examining hydration effects on blood glucose in type 1 diabetes and coordinates the Iron Deficiency Community Screening Project (CAPRI Project). Additional roles encompass coordinating physiologists at UWA's Exercise and Performance Centre, teaching across UWA's Schools of Human Sciences, Medical, and Business, and leadership in strength and conditioning programs.

Dugan has produced numerous peer-reviewed publications, among them "The misogyny of iron deficiency" (Anaesthesia, 2021), "The need to screen for anemia in exercising women" (Medicine, 2021), "Systematic review and meta-analysis of intravenous iron therapy for adults with non-anaemic iron deficiency" (Journal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle, 2022), "Dietary iron and the elite dancer" (Nutrients, 2022), and "The relationship between menorrhagia, iron deficiency, and anaemia in recreationally active females" (Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport, 2024). His work has earned recognition through awards including Teaching Excellence (Individual Teaching - Early Career Award, 2023), Editors Choice: Transfusion Evidence Library (2023), Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2022), Wiley Top Downloaded Article Award (2021), and NATA 2021 Best Poster - Oral Communications. Dugan directs P∆R∆DOX- Health & Wellbeing, integrating physical and mental health strategies, and has delivered public lectures on women's health.
