Konstandina (Connie) Koklanis, BOrth (Hons), PhD, is an Associate Professor at La Trobe University, where she currently serves as Head of the Department of Community and Clinical Health in the School of Allied Health, Human Services and Sport. A registered orthoptist, she previously held the position of Head of the Discipline of Orthoptics for over a decade. She obtained her Bachelor of Orthoptics (Honours) and Doctor of Philosophy from La Trobe University. Throughout her career, Koklanis has been deeply involved in teaching, coordinating subjects, and supervising clinical training at the university's Orthoptics Clinic on the Bundoora campus, which provides eye therapy services and trains students in orthoptics.
Koklanis's research specializations encompass binocular vision disorders, strabismus, amblyopia treatment outcomes, retinal microvasculature, dietary influences on retinal health, and vision care services for stroke survivors. She has produced over 50 peer-reviewed publications, garnering more than 580 citations. Notable publications include 'Recurrence of intermittent exotropia: factors associated with surgical outcome' (2009, Strabismus), 'Psychosocial impact of amblyopia and its treatment: a multidisciplinary study' (2006, Clinical & Experimental Ophthalmology), 'The prevalence of specific reading disability in an orthoptic population' (2006, Australian Orthoptic Journal), 'A Randomized Trial to Increase the Assessment Accuracy of Torsion' (2019, Optometry and Vision Science), 'Dietary patterns and retinal vascular calibre in children and adolescents' (2016, British Journal of Ophthalmology), 'Accuracy and Efficiency of Orthoptists in Comprehensive Adult Eye Examinations' (2016, Journal of Allied Health), and 'Postoperative Outcomes of Combined Phacovitrectomy for Macular Hole' (2024, Clinical & Experimental Ophthalmology). She leads the post-stroke vision care services project, surveying stroke survivors to enhance service quality. Koklanis served as President of Orthoptics Australia from 2010 to 2013, contributing to tertiary education initiatives for the profession, and is part of the editorial team for the British and Irish Orthoptic Journal. She has created educational videos on orthoptic assessment techniques, such as measurement of torsion and management of convergence excess.
