Colleen Seguin is Associate Professor of History and Chair of the History Department in the College of Arts and Sciences at Valparaiso University. She arrived at the university in 1996 as a Lilly Fellow in the Humanities, initially for a two-year postdoctoral position, and has remained on the faculty for nearly three decades, advancing to her current roles. Seguin earned her Ph.D. and M.A. from Duke University and her B.A. from Mount Holyoke College. Her academic career reflects a commitment to teaching and research in historical studies, particularly within the context of early modern Europe.
Seguin's research centers on the social and religious history of early modern Europe, with a focus on the histories of women and families, and specifically the experiences of Catholic women in post-Reformation England. She is currently developing a book project that explores Catholic women’s resistance to religious conformity in early modern England. Her scholarship includes the article “Ambiguous Liaisons: Catholic Women’s Relationships with their Confessors in Early Modern England,” published in the Archive for Reformation History (volume 95, 2004). In recognition of her pedagogical excellence, Seguin received the Valparaiso University Excellence in Teaching Award from the Committee to Enhance Learning and Teaching in 2018–2019. She teaches a range of courses, including Tudor Stuart England, History of Modern Britain, Gender, Spirituality, and Power: European Women, 1300–1700, The Origins of the Modern Family: Europe, 1400–1700, Medieval Europe, Developments in Western Culture through the Ages, and The Old Regime and the French Revolution. Seguin's contributions extend to departmental leadership and fostering student engagement with historical analysis.
