Dr. Chu Yao is an Accredited Practising Dietitian and Adjunct Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Gastroenterology at Monash University and Alfred Hospital. She earned her PhD in 2017 from Monash University, focusing on dietary manipulation of gut microbial function and the application of gaseous biomarkers in patients with functional and inflammatory bowel diseases. She also holds a Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics (Honours). After her PhD, she completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Hong Kong in the area of traditional Chinese nutrition therapy and functional dyspepsia. With more than ten years of experience as a research dietitian, Dr. Yao has authored over 50 peer-reviewed articles and currently accepts PhD students.
Dr. Yao leads a research program optimizing dietary strategies for patients with ulcerative colitis and ileoanal pouches, utilizing biomarkers including a novel gas-sensing capsule. Her research specializations include dietary therapies for improving pouch-related symptoms, diet therapies in ulcerative colitis, fibre and gut health, and diet and protein fermentation. She received an NHMRC Investigator Grant for her project targeting the bi-directional relationship between diet and microbes to optimise pouch health. Awards include finalist for the Gastroenterological Society of Australia Young Investigator Award (2016) and the New Conference Presenter Award at the 16th International Congress of Dietetics (2012). She peer-reviews for The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology, European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics, and British Journal of Nutrition, and reviews NHMRC Ideas Grants and others. Key publications are 'Telemetric Assessment and Comparison of Regional Colonic Metabolic Activity in Ambulant Healthy Individuals Using pH and Gas-Sensing Wireless Motility Capsules' (2026, Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics), 'Dietary Intervention Trial Design in Patients With an Ileoanal Pouch: Lessons From a Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Feeding Study' (2025, JGH Open), 'Distinct Profiles of Fecal Volatile Organic Compounds Discriminate Ulcerative Colitis Patients With an Ileoanal Pouch From Those With an Intact Colon' (2025, Molecular Nutrition & Food Research), 'Effects of dietary FODMAP content on the faecal microbiome and gastrointestinal physiology in healthy adults' (2025, British Journal of Nutrition), and 'A novel Monash Pouch diet in patients with an ileoanal pouch is tolerable and has favorable metabolic luminal effects' (2023, JGH Open).
