Dr Christopher Cvitanovic is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Business at UNSW Canberra, University of New South Wales, and Deputy Director for Science Communication at the Centre for Marine Science and Innovation. He earned his PhD from the Australian National University. Drawing on nearly ten years of experience at the science-policy interface, including positions in the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment and as a Knowledge Broker in CSIRO's Climate Adaptation Flagship, Cvitanovic specializes in transdisciplinary approaches to enhance evidence-informed decision-making for sustainable ocean futures. His earlier research examined the resilience mechanisms of coral reef systems, focusing on herbivory and water quality.
Cvitanovic's academic interests center on knowledge exchange, stakeholder engagement, marine governance, and the management of marine socio-ecological systems. Key areas include strategies for knowledge brokers and boundary organizations, knowledge co-production, overcoming barriers in interdisciplinary research, public engagement for ocean literacy, and capacity building for early-career marine scientists. He has authored or co-authored 121 journal articles and one conference paper, with preprints also available. Among his most influential publications are 'Principles for knowledge co-production in sustainability research' (Nature Sustainability, 2020), 'Improving knowledge exchange among scientists and decision-makers to facilitate the adaptive governance of marine resources: a review of knowledge and research needs' (Ocean & Coastal Management, 2015), 'From science to action: principles for undertaking environmental research that enables knowledge exchange and evidence-based decision-making' (Journal of Environmental Management, 2016), and 'Building optimism at the environmental science-policy interface through the study of bright spots' (Nature Communications, 2018). Additional notable works cover boundary spanning, community perceptions in marine parks, and policy impact for early-career researchers. His contributions extend to editorial boards of Environmental Science & Policy, Reviews in Fish Biology and Fisheries, and Socio-Ecological Practice Research, underscoring his influence in advancing science-policy linkages and marine conservation.
