About Christina

Christina Proctor is a Clinical Associate Professor and Undergraduate Coordinator in the Department of Health Promotion and Behavior at the University of Georgia College of Public Health. She received her BSHP in Health Promotion and Behavior in 2009, MPH in 2011, and PhD in Health Promotion and Behavior in 2014, all from the University of Georgia. Her dissertation examined the direct effects and interactions of individual characteristics, peers, parents, schools, and community influences on adolescent substance use and school connectedness. Proctor's career at UGA began as a Teaching Assistant in 2012, progressed to Limited Term Instructor from 2013 to 2014, Clinical Assistant Professor from 2019 to 2024, and she was promoted to Clinical Associate Professor in August 2024. She has served as Undergraduate Coordinator since 2019, overseeing program maintenance, course development, admissions, and student engagement, and previously as Internship Coordinator from 2015 to 2019, placing over 500 students.

Proctor's research focuses on rural health, including farmer well-being, occupational stress, mental health, resilience, alcohol use, substance use, and barriers to healthcare, particularly among female farmers and rural adolescents. Key publications include “Can I Speak to the Bossman?” Sources of Stress, Behavioral Adaptations, and Role Incongruency in Female Farmers (Rural Sociology, in press, 2025); The Intersection of Gender and Occupational Roles in Agriculture: Stress, Resilience, and Alcohol Behaviors of US Farmers (Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, 2024); Examining the Relationship Between Stress, Barriers to Healthcare, and Alcohol Use in the US Agricultural Community (Journal of Agromedicine, 2024); Stressors and Coping Strategies in Rural Farmers: A Qualitative Study (Journal of Agromedicine, 2023); and Investigating Race, Gender, and Access to Cigarettes in an Adolescent Population (American Journal of Health Behavior, 2012). She has presented at the American Public Health Association, National Rural Health Association, and other conferences. Proctor received the UGA College of Public Health Excellence in Teaching Award in 2020, the CPH Award for Inclusive Excellence, multiple Career Center Development Acknowledgements (2015-2023), and Delta Omega Honor Society induction in 2012. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses such as Research Design and Methods, Educational Strategies in Human Sexuality, Effects of Drug Use and Abuse, and Chronic Disease Prevention, having instructed over 140 sections since 2013. Proctor reviews for the Journal of Rural Health and Journal of Agromedicine, chairs the HPRB Undergraduate Committee, and serves on CPH Curriculum and UGA Clinical Faculty Committees.
