Professor Christopher Cardwell is a Professor in the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences at Queen's University Belfast, affiliated with the Centre for Public Health. His research specializations include pharmacoepidemiology, focusing on the impact of medications on cancer risk and survival. He conducts statistical analyses for randomised controlled trials, prognostic models, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses. Studies by Cardwell have examined medications such as statins, aspirin, proton pump inhibitors, hormone replacement therapy, and antibiotics in relation to cancers including breast, gastroesophageal, and gastric cancers. Previously, he served as a Cancer Research UK Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Queen's University Belfast.
Cardwell was shortlisted for the 2021 Vice-Chancellor’s Research Prizes competition in the Research Engagement category for Project Daire. He has given invited talks, including 'Supporting advance care planning in dementia palliative care' and 'Evaluation of the family carer decision support intervention' in 2018, 'Commonly used medications and cancer survival' at Tilburg University in 2016, 'Breast Cancer Survival and Use of Propranolol, Statins and Digoxin' at Vanderbilt University in 2015, and presentations on resources in Northern Ireland at the European Cancer Pharmacoepidemiology meeting in 2013.
