About Charlotte

Professor Charlotte Bevan, MA, PhD (Cantab.), is Professor of Cancer Biology in the Department of Surgery and Cancer, Faculty of Medicine at Imperial College London, a position she has held while leading research since joining the institution in 1999. She serves as head of the Prostate Cancer research laboratories, deputy head of the Division of Cancer, and leads the Androgen Signalling and Prostate Cancer group. Her academic background stems from the University of Cambridge, where she earned her degrees focusing initially on androgen signalling in development and disease. Bevan's research specializations encompass mechanisms of prostate cancer development, progression, and therapy resistance, particularly androgen action, non-coding RNAs as therapeutic targets and biomarkers for stratification, microRNA drivers of resistance, nuclear receptor signalling pathways, and tumour-microenvironment interactions influencing metastasis and treatment response.

Bevan's scholarly impact is evidenced by her highly cited publications, including 'The AF1 and AF2 domains of the androgen receptor interact with distinct regions of SRC1' (1999, 544 citations), 'The role of androgen receptor mutations in prostate cancer progression' (2009, 240 citations), 'Prostate cancer cell malignancy via modulation of HIF-1α pathway with isoflurane and propofol alone and in combination' (2014, 276 citations), 'Impact of analytical bias in metabonomic studies of human blood serum and plasma' (2006, 323 citations), and 'Single-molecule amplification-free multiplexed detection of circulating microRNA cancer biomarkers from serum' (2021, 233 citations). She has secured substantial research funding, such as £1.3 million from Prostate Cancer UK and Transformational Impact Awards. Career appointments include Consul for the Faculty of Medicine (non-clinical), member of the Institute of Chemical Biology Executive Board, and Clinical Training Subcommittee at the Convergence Science Centre. Professional contributions feature roles as Honorary Secretary of the British Association for Cancer Research, editorial board member for Endocrine Oncology, and recipient of the 2023 Culture and Community award. She has delivered public lectures, including at the Imperial Science Café on prostate cancer research.
