Dr Carol Orr is a Research Fellow in the School of Population and Global Health, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, at The University of Western Australia. Her academic qualifications comprise a PhD (2020, UWA), MSc, Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PgCert Ed), BSc (Hons), and BA. A Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, she previously served as a Lecturer, teaching and coordinating units in leadership and management, public health, and social and cultural diversity in health. Dr Orr also held various clinical and leadership roles in public health settings. Her PhD thesis, "Investigating the Health and Social Outcomes of Children Exposed to Family and Domestic Violence," highlights her specialized expertise in this domain.
Dr Orr employs linked administrative data to explore the health and social outcomes of children exposed to family and domestic violence, with research interests in epidemiology, quantitative methods, big data analysis, and childhood trauma. Notable publications include "Changes in the Dispensing of Antibiotics to Australian Children Between 2013 and 2023: Are We Heading in the Right Direction?" (Paediatric and Perinatal Epidemiology, 2025, co-authors E. Kelty et al.); "Children exposed to family and domestic violence perpetrated against their mother are at an increased risk of emergency department attendance in childhood" (2025, co-authors S. Sims et al.); "Exposure to family and domestic violence in the prenatal period is associated with an increased risk of hospitalization for bronchiolitis in children under 2 years" (Journal of Public Health, 2024, co-authors E. Kelty et al.); "Exposure to family and domestic violence is associated with lower attendance and higher suspension in school children" (Child Abuse & Neglect, 2023, co-authors C. Fisher et al.); and "Neonatal Outcomes Associated With in Utero Exposure to Oxycodone, Overall and by Trimester of Exposure: A Retrospective Cohort Study" (The Journal of Pain, 2023, co-authors E. Kelty et al.). She serves as an investigator on the Stan Perron Charitable Foundation-funded project "Understanding the impact exposure to family and domestic violence has on children’s health and wellbeing" (2023–2031) and a prior ANROWS-funded study on mental health outcomes using linked police and health records. Her contributions align with UN Sustainable Development Goals 5 (Gender Equality) and 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions).
