Carlos Seiglie is a Professor of Economics in the Department of Economics at Rutgers University-Newark, Colleges of Arts & Sciences, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey - Newark. He is an affiliated faculty member in Finance and Economics at Rutgers Business School, contributing to the Business & Economics discipline. Seiglie also serves as Core Faculty in the Division of Global Affairs at Rutgers University-Newark, where he previously held the position of Program Director until 2011. He maintains additional affiliations with the Department of Latino and Caribbean Studies and the Center for Latin American Studies-New Brunswick. His academic background includes a B.A. in Economics (summa cum laude) from Rutgers University, an M.A. in Economics, and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Chicago in 1991. Seiglie has held visiting professorships at Columbia University, the Helsinki School of Economics (now Aalto University School of Economics), the University of Alicante, and Université Pierre Mendes France - Grenoble II. In addition, he has provided consulting services to both public and private institutions.
Seiglie specializes in applied microeconomics, defense economics, and international economics. He has produced over 40 refereed journal articles and book chapters, with his work appearing in prominent publications such as the Journal of Conflict Resolution, Southern Economic Journal, Defence and Peace Economics, and the Handbook of Defense Economics. Key publications include "International Conflict and Military Expenditures: An Externality Approach" (1988, Journal of Conflict Resolution), "Efficient Peacekeeping for a New World Order" (2005, Peace Economics, Peace Science and Public Policy), "Trade, Peace and Democracy: An Analysis of Dyadic Disputes" with Solomon Polachek (2007, Handbook of Defense Economics), "The Impact of Foreign Direct Investment on International Conflict" with Solomon Polachek and Jun Xiang (2007, Defence and Peace Economics), "Openness of the Economy, Terms of Trade and Arms" (2016, Southern Economic Journal), "Determining Values Using Options Contracts" with Jun Xiang (2017, Asian Journal of Law & Economics), and "Explanations of Military Spending: The Evidence from Legislators" (2022, Defence and Peace Economics). His research has received over 720 citations and an h-index of 14 according to Google Scholar. Seiglie serves on the editorial boards of several journals and has supervised doctoral dissertations, including that of Firuz Shukurov in 2020.
