Carlos Jimenez is a Professor in Architecture and Design at Rice University’s School of Architecture, where he has taught since 1987, initially as a visiting critic, becoming full-time faculty in 1997 and tenured in 2000. He earned a B.Arch. with honors from the University of Houston College of Architecture in 1981, receiving awards for best thesis project and best portfolio. In 1983, Jimenez established Carlos Jiménez Studio in Houston, a design practice known for its innovative approach to form, space, and endurance. Throughout his career, he has served as a visiting professor at institutions including Harvard University Graduate School of Design, University of California Berkeley, University of Texas at Austin, and University of Oregon, and frequently acts as a lecturer, juror, and visiting critic at universities and cultural institutions across the United States, Europe, Latin America, and beyond. Jimenez teaches undergraduate and graduate design studios as well as a seminar on architecture examined through case studies in film, literature, and music.
Jimenez pursues scholarship through design, integrating drawing, writing, and the fabrication of buildings and architectural spaces. Principal built projects encompass the Central Administration/Junior School Building for the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Houston Fine Art Press; Spencer Studio Art Building at Williams College; Tyler School of Art at Temple University, Philadelphia; Evry Housing Tower in Evry, France; Saint George Hotel in Marfa, Texas; and Rice University Library Service Center addition. His contributions have earned election as a 2023 National Academician of the National Academy of Design, recognizing him as a leader in architectural thought; Rice University’s 2013 George R. Brown Award for Superior Teaching; DesignIntelligence’s 2013 Most Admired Educator; AIA Houston Educator of the Year (2009); Charles Duncan Award (2006); and service as a jury member for the Pritzker Architecture Prize (2001–2011). Key publications include books *Carlos Jiménez: House and Studio* (2003), *Carlos Jiménez Buildings* (1996), and *Crowley* (2009), alongside monographic issues such as *A+U* No. 306 “Carlos Jiménez” (1996) and *2G Carlos Jiménez* (2000). His works and writings have been exhibited nationally and internationally, influencing architectural education and practice.
