Calvin Meaney, PharmD, BCPS, FCCP, is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice at the University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, where he serves as interim division head of the Division of Outcomes and Practice Advancement. He earned his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University at Buffalo in 2011. Meaney maintains a clinical practice specializing in nephrology at the Erie County Medical Center. A member of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy since 2009, he engages students through real-world applications of pharmacotherapy using active learning techniques and finds advising and mentoring particularly rewarding.
Meaney's research focuses on the optimization of drug therapy through quantitative clinical pharmacology, including personalization of erythropoiesis-stimulating agents in hemodialysis patients, drug-induced nephrotoxicity such as from vancomycin and piperacillin-tazobactam, and the optimal use of antibacterials in hemodialysis. He advocates for the adoption of the race-free 2021 estimated glomerular filtration rate equation for accurate medication dosing in chronic kidney disease patients, co-authoring a commentary in the Journal of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy on this topic. Key publications include 'Optimizing Comprehensive Medication Management in CKD: An Opportunity to Integrate Pharmacists in the Kidney Care Team' (American Journal of Kidney Diseases, 2026), 'It’s time to stop rounding serum creatinine' (American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy, 2026), 'Adopting Race-Free Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate for Unifying Medication-Related Decision-Making' (JACCP, 2026), 'AKHOMM initiative curriculum and learning and action collaborative' (American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy, 2025), and 'Effectiveness and Safety of Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter-2 Inhibitor Continuation in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes and Late-Stage Chronic Kidney Disease' (Journal of Pharmacy Technology, 2025). His contributions have earned him the 2023 Fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy, the 2023 Outstanding Reviewer award for ACCP’s Pharmacotherapy Journal, and the 2019 New York State Chapter of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy Researcher of the Year Award.
