C. Arden Pope III is the Mary Lou Fulton Professor of Economics and University Professor at Brigham Young University in the Department of Economics, College of Family, Home, and Social Sciences. His work centers on Business & Economics, with primary research interests in natural resource and environmental issues, particularly the human health effects of air pollution. Pope received his BS in Agricultural Economics from Brigham Young University in 1978, MS and PhD in Economics from Iowa State University in 1981, and completed an IPH Fellowship in Environmental Health and Public Policy at Harvard University in 1993. His professional career began as Assistant Professor of Agricultural Economics at Texas A&M University from 1982 to 1984. Since 1984 at Brigham Young University, he advanced from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor in 1986, Full Professor in 1994, Mary Lou Fulton Professor in 2005, Associate Dean of the College from 2009 to 2012, Karl G. Maeser Distinguished University Professor in 2006, and University Professor in 2022.
Pope has produced groundbreaking research on the health effects of fine particulate air pollution, including co-authoring the Harvard Six Cities Study published in the New England Journal of Medicine (1993), which linked air pollution to increased mortality; "Lung cancer, cardiopulmonary mortality and long-term exposure to fine particulate air pollution" in JAMA (2002); "Fine-particulate air pollution and life expectancy in the United States" in the New England Journal of Medicine (2009); "Cardiovascular mortality and long-term exposure to particulate air pollution" in Circulation (2004); and the critical review "Health effects of fine particulate air pollution: Lines that connect" in the Journal of the Air & Waste Management Association (2006). His contributions have shaped environmental policy through service on the U.S. EPA Science Advisory Board (2010-2013), chairing the EPA Advisory Council on Clean Air Compliance Analysis (2011-2013), and various scientific advisory committees. Pope has earned the Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher designation (2018-2023), Utah Governor’s Medal for Science & Technology (2004), BYU Karl G. Maeser Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Award (2006), Thomas T. Mercer Joint Prize (2001), and Gardner Prize from the Utah Academy of Sciences, Arts, and Letters (2014). He serves on the editorial review boards of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine and Environmental Health Perspectives.
