Bruce Drushel is Professor and Chair of the Department of Media, Journalism, and Film at Miami University. He earned his Ph.D. from Ohio University in 1991. Throughout his career at Miami University, Drushel has focused his research on media policy and economics, media audiences, media history, and queer representation in electronic media and film. His scholarship examines topics such as social networking and impression management, telecommunications regulation, ethics of emerging media, and LGBTQ perspectives in popular culture. Drushel's work has appeared in leading journals including the Journal of Homosexuality, Journal of Media Economics, European Financial Journal, Film International, Journal of American Culture, Communication Law Review, and FemSpec.
Drushel has edited several influential volumes, including Queer Identities/Political Realities (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2009, co-edited with Kathleen German), The Ethics of Emerging Media: Information, Social Norms, and New Media Technology (Continuum, 2011, co-edited with Kathleen German), Fan Phenomenon: Star Trek (Intellect, 2013), Queer Media Images: LGBT Perspectives (Bloomsbury, 2013), Sontag and the Camp Aesthetic: Advancing New Perspectives (Lexington Books, 2017), and LGBTQ Culture: The Changing Landscape (Routledge, 2020). Notable articles include "The Telecommunications Act of 1996 and Radio Market Structure" (1998, 109 citations), "Social Networking and Impression Management: Self-Presentation in the Digital Age" (2012, 123 citations), "Virtually Supportive: Self-Disclosure of Minority Sexualities Through Online Social Networking Sites" (2010, 80 citations), and "Where Radio Dare Not Tread: Podcasts as Queer Audio Media" (2023). He is the founding co-editor of the journal Queer Studies in Media & Popular Culture and has guest-edited special issues for the Journal of Homosexuality on AIDS and Culture and Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture on related themes. Drushel's contributions have advanced scholarly discourse on media's role in shaping queer identities and social norms.
