About Bronwyn

Associate Professor Bronwyn McAllan is a faculty member in the Discipline of Physiology, School of Medical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney. Her research centers on reproductive physiology, the timing of reproduction, and energetic costs of reproduction, with a focus on marsupials and small mammals. She examines torpor patterns, the influence of photoperiod on reproductive timing, lipid composition in hibernators, and physiological adaptations to environmental stressors such as unpredictable food supplies and arid conditions. McAllan leads the Environmental Control of Physiology Laboratory and supervises honours students in physiology projects. She coordinates undergraduate units including PHSI2008 Integrated Physiology and contributes to nutrition science courses. As an internal collaborator in the Charles Perkins Centre, she supports research in nutrition, human health, and natural resources.

McAllan's scholarly output includes over 70 publications and more than 2,000 citations on Google Scholar. Key works encompass 'Torpor during reproduction in mammals and birds: dealing with an energetic conundrum' (McAllan and Geiser, 2014, American Zoologist), 'Boom and bust: a review of the physiology of the marsupial genus Antechinus' (Naylor, Richardson, and McAllan, 2008, Journal of Comparative Physiology B), 'Lateralisation of escape responses in the stripe-faced dunnart, Sminthopsis macroura' (Lippolis et al., 2005, Laterality), 'The degree of dietary fatty acid unsaturation affects torpor patterns and lipid composition of a hibernator' (Geiser, McAllan, and Kenagy, 1994, Journal of Comparative Physiology B), and 'The role of photoperiod in the timing of reproduction in the Dasyurid Marsupial Antechinus stuartii' (McAllan and Dickman, 1986, Oecologia). She has collaborated extensively with researchers including Fritz Geiser, Chris R. Dickman, and G. John Kenagy. McAllan serves on the editorial board of Australian Mammalogy and is listed as a member of the University of Sydney's China Studies Centre. Her contributions advance understanding of mammalian thermoregulation, energy conservation, and reproductive strategies in ecological contexts.
