Dr Braam Lowies serves as Senior Lecturer in Property within the School of Accounting and Finance, College of Business and Law at Adelaide University. He earned his BCom (cum laude) in 1994, BCom (Honours) in Banking in 1995, MSc in Real Estate (cum laude) in 2007, and PhD in Finance in 2013, all from the University of Pretoria, South Africa. A Chartered Surveyor since 2011 (MRICS), Lowies transitioned from five years in the banking sector to academia in 2000 as a lecturer in financial management. He has held positions including Director of the UniSA Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI) and currently acts as Stream Director: Social Enterprise in the UniSA Centre for Markets, Values and Inclusion, as well as Adjunct Academic at the University of Pretoria since 2019. Additionally, he has provided consultancy services to the New Zealand Government Property Management Centre of Expertise.
Lowies' research interests encompass ageing and older people, household finance and financial literacy, housing policy, and real estate and valuation services. His work particularly examines behavioural aspects of housing and finance decisions among older adults, intergenerational financial decision-making, and disruptive property investment models. Notable publications include "Understanding the effect of financial behaviour on mental health: evidence from Australia" (Stress and Health, 2025), "The home environment: influences on the health of young-old and old-old adults in Australia" (Ageing & Society, 2024), "The effect of psychological factors on financial behaviour among older Australians: Evidence from the early stages of COVID-19 pandemic" (PLoS ONE, 2023), "Locked-out: generational inequalities of housing tenure and housing type" (Property Management, 2022), and "Female perspectives on housing quality and household characteristics, perceptions and challenges: evidence from Australia" (Habitat International, 2020). He has earned awards such as the UniSA Business Public Intellectual of the Year (2022), Property Management Emerald Literati Award for distinguished reviewer (2022), and Journal of Property Investment and Finance Emerald Literati Award for Most Commended Paper (2019). Lowies contributes as Consulting Editor for Property Management (since 2020) and ACTA STRUCTILIA (since 2023), and serves on committees including the UniSA Business Negligible Risk Ethics Committee and RICS Member Engagement Group.
