Dr. Bikram Chatterjee is a Senior Lecturer in Accounting in the Department of Accountancy and Finance at the University of Otago's Otago Business School. He earned his BCom Honours from the University of Calcutta, Postgraduate Diploma in Accountancy and Master of Management Accounting from Massey University, and PhD from the University of Canberra. Before joining Otago, he held positions at multiple universities in Australia and New Zealand, as well as at CPA Australia. His academic career reflects a commitment to advancing accounting scholarship through rigorous research and professional engagement.
Chatterjee's research specializations encompass IFRS, public sector reporting, private sector reporting, performance measurement, and accounting education, with extensive publications in leading journals. Key works include 'Using neural networks and CEO remuneration to predict the debt-income ratio of New Zealand local councils' (Pacific-Basin Finance Journal, 2026, co-authored with S. Bhattacharya and A. Mukherjee); 'CEO remuneration, financial distress and firm life cycle' (Pacific-Basin Finance Journal, 2023, with J. Jia, M. Nguyen, G. Taylor, and L. Duong); 'Corporate political donations, board gender diversity, and corporate social responsibility: Evidence from Australia' (Journal of Business Research, 2022, with M. B. Muttakin et al.); 'The spectacle of research assessment systems: insights from New Zealand and the United Kingdom' (Accounting, Auditing & Accountability Journal, 2020, with C. J. Cordery, I. De Loo, and H. Letiche); and the book chapter 'The relationship between pre-election reports in New Zealand local governments and voter turnout' (2019, with R. Taplin, N. Pawsey, M. Low, and G. Taylor). Passionate about research impact, he has participated in the Q&A panel for the CAANZ Frontiers Forum on strategies for business faculty collaborations, served on assessment panels for the Taupo and Waipa New Zealand Business Awards, contributed an article to Campus Review on innovative business curriculum, acted as a technical committee member for the AFAANZ conference public sector/not-for-profit stream, and reviewed manuscripts for multiple academic journals.
