Professor Bhagirath Chauhan holds a joint appointment as Professor in Weed Science with the Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation (QAAFI) and the School of Agriculture and Food Sustainability at the University of Queensland, where he joined in 2014. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Adelaide. Prior to UQ, he worked for seven years at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in the Philippines. With more than 20 years of research experience, Professor Chauhan leads studies on weed biology and management in crops such as wheat, maize, sorghum, mungbean, soybean, chickpea, rice, and cotton. He has investigated the seed ecology of over 100 weed species and developed integrated weed management options using agronomic approaches including row spacing, seeding rates, and weed-competitive cultivars. His expertise extends to conducting trials on improved agronomy of new production systems and integrated weed management in Australia and more than 10 Asian countries. Professor Chauhan maintains strong collaborations with researchers in the USA, Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, Iran, Pakistan, Nigeria, and China.
Professor Chauhan's research interests include weed ecology and biology, herbicide use and resistance management, non-chemical weed control, integrated weed management systems incorporating agronomic and varietal components, nanoherbicides, tillage systems, and conservation agriculture. He serves as Speciality Chief Editor for Frontiers in Agronomy and Associate Editor for Weed Science published by the Weed Science Society of America. He has published over 350 articles in peer-reviewed journals, along with several books and book chapters. Notable edited volumes include Recent Advances in Weed Science (2025, Springer), Biology and Management of Problematic Crop Weed Species (2021, Elsevier), and Cotton Production (2020, John Wiley & Sons). Other key contributions encompass chapters on nanoherbicides, omics approaches for weed management, and herbicide-resistant weeds in rice-wheat systems. Professor Chauhan is an Honorary Member of the Weed Science Society of America and a life member of the International Weed Science Society, Asia Pacific Weed Science Society, and Indian Society of Weed Science. His work advances sustainable weed management practices globally.
