Benoit Forget is the KEPCO Professor of Nuclear Engineering and Head of the Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering within the School of Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Appointed department head effective April 1, 2023, succeeding Professor Anne White, he previously served as associate head since 2019, focusing on expanding computational science and engineering activities and leading the department's engagement with the MIT Stephen A. Schwarzman College of Computing, including as co-chair of the Working Group on College Infrastructure. Since joining the MIT faculty in 2008, Forget has led the Computational Reactor Physics Group (CRPG), which developed the open-source codes OpenMC for Monte Carlo transport and OpenMOC for the method of characteristics, enabling high-fidelity reactor simulations on advanced computing platforms to optimize designs for safer, more efficient nuclear reactors. Prior to MIT, he worked as a nuclear engineer at the Idaho National Laboratory on reactor methods development and fuel cycle analysis. He holds a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology (2006), a Master of Engineering in Energy Engineering (2003), and a Bachelor of Engineering in Chemical Engineering (2001) from École Polytechnique de Montréal.
Forget's research interests center on computational reactor physics, radiation transport, uncertainty quantification, and nuclear data, with contributions in Monte Carlo methods for large-scale reactor analysis, deterministic 3D transport simulations, multiphysics coupling for steady-state and transient analysis, and propagation of uncertainties in nuclear systems. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses including 22.212 Nuclear Reactor Physics II, 22.05 Neutron Physics and Radiation Transport, 22.211 Nuclear Reactor Physics I, and 22.213 Nuclear Reactor Physics III, and co-organizes industry-focused short courses on reactor safety. His awards include Fellow of the American Nuclear Society (2024), Landis Young Member Engineering Achievement Award (2013), Ruth and Joel Spira Award for Excellence in Teaching (2010), and NSE American Nuclear Society Outstanding Teacher Award (2009). Forget chaired the American Nuclear Society's Reactor Physics Division from 2011 to 2012.
