Dr Barry Hill is a Senior Lecturer in Creative Arts in the Faculty of Business, Law and Arts at Southern Cross University, where he holds the position of Coordinator for the Bachelor of Contemporary Music program. As a dedicated music educator, composer, and performer, he brings expertise in jazz, classical, popular music, audio engineering, ensemble direction, and arranging to his teaching in the contemporary music curriculum. Hill obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from Monash University and earned his Doctor of Philosophy from Southern Cross University in 2010. His PhD thesis, titled 'Human-machine music: twenty-first century models of music performance practice in an Australian contemporary music community,' employed a practice-based research methodology to investigate innovative creative processes within the live electronica music scene. This work featured a multimedia performance and exegesis that highlighted the interplay between conventional musicianship and computerized instruments in response to social, economic, and technological shifts. Prior to joining Southern Cross University, Hill served as Coordinator of the Bachelor of Music Industry Program at RMIT University from 2007 to 2011.
Hill's research specializations include musical creative practice, musicology, the contemporary music industry, audio technology, and environmental sustainability within the music sector. His scholarly contributions encompass peer-reviewed articles such as 'Creative collaboration in the cloud: Using Splice Studio and Audiomovers to enhance online music education outcomes,' published in Perfect Beat in 2021, and 'Conflict in collaborative musical composition: a case study,' appearing in 2017. Additionally, he has produced a range of creative outputs, including the composition 'In the galley of the ghosts' in 2017 and the performance 'Patterns Dance Work' associated with the Lismore Regional Art Gallery Plein Air Residency Program. Hill has demonstrated leadership in sustainable music initiatives through the Sunflower Mobile Solar Powered Audio Project, which powered one of Australia's first solar-powered music concerts, underscoring advancements in practical sustainable energy technologies for the music industry. His work aligns with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and adapts music education to contemporary digital and environmental challenges, fostering innovative practices in music performance and collaboration.
