About Azita

Dr. Azita Manouchehri is a professor of mathematics education in the Department of Teaching and Learning at The Ohio State University’s College of Education and Human Ecology. She earned her Ph.D. in mathematics education from the University of Georgia in 1994 under the guidance of Dr. James W. Wilson. Her dissertation was titled "The Impact of Computer Based Explorations on the Mathematical Thinking Processes of Preservice Elementary Teachers: Two Case Studies." Prior to her current position, she served as a Research Fellow at Central Michigan University from 2003 to 2004. At Ohio State University, she has supervised doctoral students including Jennifer Czocher (2013), Dinglei Huang (2017), Stephen Lewis (2018), and Pingping Zhang (2014), among others.

Dr. Manouchehri's research specializations include mathematics teacher education, factors that enhance reformed-based mathematics teaching in classrooms, the role of technology in mathematics instruction, inquiry-based mathematics teaching, mathematical discourse, and the development of mathematical knowledge for secondary teaching. She has conducted nearly 100 professional development sessions and seminars across the country on topics such as technology in mathematics, mathematical problem solving, problem posing, inquiry in classrooms, and authentic assessment. Key publications include "Nurturing Mathematical Thinking" (Mathematics Teacher, 2018), "Online Mathematics Teacher Education in the US: A Status Report" (Contemporary Issues in Technology and Teacher Education, 2019, co-authored with Dinglei Huang), "Using interactive algebra software to support a discourse community" (The Journal of Mathematical Behavior, 2004), "From classroom discussions to mathematical discourse" (Mathematics Teacher, 2006, co-authored with D. St. John), and "Interactive Learning: Unpacking the Influence of Computer Simulations on Students’ Mathematical Modeling Processes" (2024). She serves as a Faculty Senator for 2023-2026 and is a member of the Graduate Council. Dr. Manouchehri is affiliated with organizations including the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, Psychology of Mathematics Education, American Educational Research Association, Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators, and Association of Women in Mathematics.
