Austin Brown is an Associate Professor of Statistics in the School of Data Science and Analytics within the College of Computing and Software Engineering at Kennesaw State University. He joined the Department of Statistics and Analytical Sciences as an Assistant Professor in August 2019, following the completion of his Ph.D. in Applied Statistics and Research Methods from the University of Northern Colorado in 2019. He also holds an M.S. in Applied Statistics and Research Methods from the same institution, a Master’s of Management Practice from Colorado State University, and a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Northern Colorado. Brown directs the Data Science and Analytics Ph.D. Program and teaches courses including Data Visualization (DATA 3230), Biostatistics (STAT 3125), Quality Control and Process Improvement (STAT 7110), Programming in R (STAT 7130), and Applied Regression Analysis (STAT 7210). His prior experience includes roles as a Teaching Assistant and Research Consulting Lab Consultant at the University of Northern Colorado, as well as credit analyst positions in the private sector.
Brown's research focuses on process improvement through nonparametric statistical process control, control charts, Bayesian quality control, mixture distributions, and statistical software such as SAS and R, with additional interests in statistics in sports and academic persistence in higher education. He leads the Annual Recidivism Report for the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice, supported by a $62,000 grant, which analyzes recidivism patterns, evaluates intervention programs, and informs policy through presentations to the Georgia General Assembly. As co-principal investigator on an NIH-funded study, he conducts statistical analysis for research on walking's role in combating obesity, developing predictive models for personalized step goals. Key publications include 'An Evaluation of College Students’ Perceptions of Statisticians' (2022, with Taasoobshirazi, Wagner, and Copeland), 'Motivation and Postsecondary Enrollment Among High School Students Whose Parents Did Not Go to College' (2022, with Tsai, Lehrman, and Tian), 'The Effect of a Repeat Septic Shock Simulation on the Knowledge and Skill Performance of Undergraduate Nursing Students' (2021, with Maguire), and 'Situational Awareness in Acute Patient Deterioration: Identifying Student Time to Task.' Awards include the UNC College of Education and Behavioral Sciences Graduate Scholar (2019), Western Users of SAS Software 2018 Student Scholarship, and Hutchinson-Lahman Research Excellence Award (2018). His contributions extend to dissertation committees and graduate student training in real-world data analysis.
