Aswath Damodaran holds the Kerschner Family Chair in Finance Education and is Professor of Finance in the Business & Economics faculty at New York University Stern School of Business. He earned a B.Com. in Accounting from Madras University in 1977, an M.S. in Management from the Indian Institute of Management in 1979, an M.B.A. in Finance from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1981, and a Ph.D. in Finance from UCLA in 1985. Prior to joining Stern in 1986, he lectured in Finance at the University of California, Berkeley from 1984 to 1986, where he received the Earl Cheit Outstanding Teaching Award in 1985. Damodaran teaches corporate finance and valuation courses to MBA students, a valuation class to undergraduates, and offers occasional short-term classes on these topics. His research specializations include valuation, portfolio management, applied corporate finance, information and prices, real estate, corporate governance, asset management, and equity risk premiums. He has published papers in leading academic journals such as the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Financial Economics, and the Review of Financial Studies.
Damodaran has received numerous accolades for his contributions to finance education. These include the Stern School of Business Excellence in Teaching Award in 1988, 1991, 1992, 1999, 2001, 2007, 2008, 2012, and 2016; the NYU-wide Distinguished Teaching Award in 1990 as the youngest recipient; Giblin, Glucksman, and Heyman Fellowships; the David Margolis Teaching Excellence Fellowship; and the Richard L. Rosenthal Award for Innovation in Investment Management and Corporate Finance. Graduating MBA classes have voted him Professor of the Year nine times. He is the author of several widely used texts, including Damodaran on Valuation, Investment Valuation, The Dark Side of Valuation, The Little Book of Valuation, Corporate Finance: Theory and Practice, Applied Corporate Finance: A User’s Manual, Investment Philosophies, Investment Fables, Strategic Risk Taking, and Narrative and Numbers (2017). Damodaran maintains an extensive online presence through his website, providing datasets, webcasts, and the blog Musings on Markets, enhancing accessibility to finance education globally. He belongs to the Finance department and the Glucksman Institute for Research in Securities Markets at Stern.
