Dr. Ashley Walls White is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Mathematics Department at Belmont Abbey College. She earned dual Bachelor of Science degrees in Mathematics and Philosophy from North Carolina State University in 2011. Continuing her studies at the same institution, she obtained a Master of Science in Mathematics in 2014 and a Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics in 2017. Her dual expertise in mathematics and philosophy informs her approach to teaching and research, emphasizing abstract reasoning and interdisciplinary connections.
Dr. White's research specializations include Lie and Leibniz Algebras, Algebraic Geometry, Algebraic Topology, and algebraic applications in music and dance composition. She investigates the interplay between mathematics and the arts, particularly algebraic structures in creative processes. She teaches a wide array of courses, including Intermediate Algebra, College Algebra, Math for Liberal Arts, Calculus I, Calculus II, Calculus III, Euclid (HON 208), Algebraic Geometry, Number Theory, Math History, Philosophy of Mathematics, and Abstract Algebra. Her favorite courses are Math for Liberal Arts and Abstract Algebra, where she excels at demonstrating the fun and accessibility of mathematics. Key publications include co-authored works such as 'Companion Lie Algebras of Leibniz Algebras' with A. McAlister and E. Stinzinger (2015); 'Conjugacy of Cartan Subalgebras in Solvable Leibniz Algebras and Real Leibniz Algebras' with E. Stinzinger in Algebra and Representation Theory (2018, vol. 21, p. 627); and 'STEM Majors, Art Thinkers (STEM + Arts)–Issues of Duality, Rigor and Inclusion' with Fay Cobb Payton and Tara Mullins in Journal of STEM Education: Innovations and Research (2017, vol. 18 no. 3, pp. 39-47). In addition to her academic roles, Dr. White serves as Faculty Director for the STEM Learning Lab and academic assistance programs, supporting student success in STEM fields at Belmont Abbey College.
