Dr. Asanka Perera is a lecturer in the Department of Business Law and Taxation at Monash Business School, Monash University, where she has been teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Business Law, Australian Company Law, and Business and Company Law. With more than thirty years of experience in academia, she previously served as a senior lecturer at the Open University of Sri Lanka before joining Monash University. Perera's academic qualifications include a PhD in Law on Intellectual Property Lawmaking in Sri Lanka from Monash University, awarded in 2023; an MPhil in Law on Protection of Plant Varieties in Sri Lanka from Monash University, awarded in 2004; a Master of Comparative Laws from the University of Delhi, awarded in 1997; a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Colombo, awarded in 1991; and a Graduate Certificate in Higher Education from Monash University, awarded in 2012.
Her research specializes in intellectual property law, with particular emphasis on plant variety protection, the TRIPS Agreement, patents and economic development, farmers' rights, innovation and development, and gene patenting, often examined in the context of Sri Lanka. Perera has produced eight research outputs, including the book Dilemmas of Intellectual Property Discourse in Sri Lanka (Springer, 2024). Key journal articles comprise 'Searching for a balance: realisation of farmers' rights in Sri Lanka: a case study on ownership and stewardship' (European Intellectual Property Review, 2021), 'Legal framework for plant breeder's rights in Sri Lanka: a review' (European Intellectual Property Review, 2017), and 'Myriad Genetics Inc: patenting of isolated human DNA - a missed policy opportunity or judicial interpretation supporting a judicial minimalist status quo (Part 2)' (European Intellectual Property Review, 2017, co-authored with Paul Sugden). She also contributed the book chapter 'From neglect to protection: recognising the importance of farmers’ varieties in Sri Lanka' in Intellectual Property Law and Plant Protection: Challenges and Developments in Asia (Routledge, 2019). Perera has presented papers at international conferences, including multiple IP and Innovation Researchers of Asia (IPIRA) events from 2020 to 2024, and the Asian Law and Society Association Meeting in 2019. She is currently accepting PhD students as an associate supervisor in the fields of patents and plant breeders' rights, with research activity spanning 2011 to 2024 and relevance to UN Sustainable Development Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth.
