Arindam Banerjee is a Senior Professor in the School of Biological Sciences at the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS), Kolkata, India, where he currently serves as Director. He earned his Ph.D. in Science from the Molecular Biophysics Unit of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, in 1997. Subsequently, he pursued postdoctoral research at the University of Washington, Seattle, from 1997 to 2000. Banerjee joined IACS as a Lecturer in 2000, progressing to Reader in 2005, Associate Professor in 2008, Professor in 2011, and Senior Professor in 2017. He chaired the School of Biological Sciences from July 2018 to July 2021 and has served on the Organic and Medicinal Chemistry Division Board of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).
Banerjee's research specializes in peptide-based functional biomaterials, chemical biology, and nanohybrids, with a focus on the self-assembly of peptides into hydrogels and soft materials for applications such as dye removal, heavy metal sensing, antimicrobial surfaces, and optoelectronics. His work has garnered over 10,300 citations, reflecting substantial impact in supramolecular chemistry and materials science. Key publications include 'Facile Synthesis of Water-Soluble Fluorescent Silver Nanoclusters and HgII Sensing' (high citations), 'Self-assembling tripeptide based hydrogels and their use in removal of dyes from water,' and 'A new aromatic amino acid based organogel for oil spill recovery' (Journal of Materials Chemistry, 2012). He has received the C.N.R. Rao National Prize in Chemical Sciences, the Thomson Reuters Research Excellence India Citation Award 2015, Fellowship of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC), and election to the Fellowship of the Indian Academy of Sciences in 2015 under the Chemistry section. Banerjee was also recognized as a 2023 ACS Publications Peer Reviewer and serves on the Advisory Board of Soft Matter journal.
