Dr. Argarita N. Johnson-Palavicini, D.M.A., serves as Interim Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, Chair of the Department of Arts and Humanities, Assistant Professor of Music, and Director of the Ambassador Chorale at Florida Memorial University. In these leadership roles, she oversees academic programs in the arts and humanities, guides faculty development, and directs a premier musical ensemble that represents the university's commitment to cultural excellence and public engagement. Known affectionately as “Dr. J” among students and performers, she fosters an environment where artistic talent thrives through rigorous training and innovative performances.
The Ambassador Chorale, founded during the 1975-76 academic year by the late Professor Roosevelt Williams with just four members as Florida Memorial University's public relations entity, has expanded significantly under Dr. Johnson-Palavicini's direction, which she has held for nearly seven years. Now boasting upwards of fifty members, the chorale operates as an independent academic ensemble dedicated to mastering sight-reading, vocal technique, and performance pedagogy. Its repertoire spans diverse genres, including classical works, gospel, jazz, and original student compositions, while members assume leadership roles in appointed administrative positions. Under her guidance, the ensemble has achieved widespread acclaim through collaborations with the New World Symphony and soprano Michelle Bradley, international tours across the United States, The Bahamas, and Europe, a landmark debut at Carnegie Hall in June 2025—performing with the Choirs of America In Harmony and delivering a solo rendition of a traditional African American spiritual—a rendition of the national anthem at a Miami Dolphins game in 2023, and a performance of 'America the Beautiful' at the College Football Playoff National Championship game in 2026. Dr. Johnson-Palavicini has also announced plans for an upcoming tour to Spain in 2026. As Department Chair, her message to students emphasizes equipping them to 'Own Your Excellence' in the arts.
