Dr Apil Gurung is a Lecturer in Nursing in the School of Health at the University of the Sunshine Coast, based at the Moreton Bay campus. He earned his Doctor of Health Science from Queensland University of Technology in 2018, Master of Public Health with Distinction from the University of Wollongong in 2012, and Bachelor of Nursing Science (Graduate Entry) between 2009 and 2010. His career includes prior roles as Lecturer at Southern Cross University in 2018 and sessional academic positions from 2014 to 2017. Gurung has received an AdvanceHE Fellowship and holds the position of Deputy Chair of the Street Health Faculty at the Australian College of Nursing. He contributes to the Healthy Ageing Research Cluster, focusing on community-engaged practices for creativity and connectedness in ageing populations.
Gurung's research specializations encompass aged care, gerontology, primary health care, and social justice. Notable publications include 'The outcomes of cardiac rehabilitation in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest survivors: A retrospective observational study' with K.N. Singh and others (Contemporary Nurse, 2025); 'A tale of two generations: Case study of intergenerational living in residential aged care' with Sam Edwards (Collegian, 2022); 'To transfer or not to transfer: Aged care nurses' decision-making to transfer residents to emergency departments' (Collegian, 2021); 'The enigma: Decision-making to transfer residents to the emergency department, communication and care delivery between emergency department staff and residential aged care facilities' nurses' with Michele Romeo and others (Australasian Journal on Ageing, 2022); and 'Understanding registered nurse decision-making, communication and empathy towards patients during emergency department transfers' with Marc Broadbent and others (Journal of Clinical Nursing, 2020). His doctoral thesis, 'Deciding to transfer a resident to the emergency department' (Queensland University of Technology, 2018), provides foundational insights into aged care transfer decisions. Gurung's scholarship, cited over 68 times, advances knowledge on nurse decision-making in aged care emergencies and intergenerational care models.
