Dr. Antonio Westphalen, MD, PhD, MAS, FSAR, serves as the Section Chief of Abdominal Imaging and Professor of Radiology, Urology, and Radiation Oncology at the University of Washington and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center. He earned his MD from the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul in 1995, completed his radiology residency in Brazil, and pursued a fellowship in Abdominal Imaging at the University of California, San Francisco in 2005. Additionally, he holds a Master's degree in Clinical Research (MAS) from UCSF and a PhD in Surgical Sciences with a focus on Urology from the Universidade Federal do Sul, awarded in 2012. Before joining the University of Washington, Dr. Westphalen was on the faculty at UCSF, where he directed the Clinical Prostate MR Imaging Program, chaired the MR Safety Committee, and actively participated in the Clinical Research and Prostate Cancer Imaging teams. He also holds leadership roles in the Cardiothoracic and Abdominal Advanced Imaging Lab and practices at UW Medical Center Montlake.
Dr. Westphalen's research centers on the application of advanced imaging technologies and artificial intelligence to enhance the diagnosis and management of prostate cancer and other genitourinary malignancies. He is recognized nationally and internationally as a leader in prostate cancer imaging, with a particular emphasis on prostate MRI innovations. Having authored nearly 200 peer-reviewed publications, his work has significantly influenced the field, as evidenced by over 7,500 citations on Google Scholar. Dr. Westphalen is a Fellow of the Society of Abdominal Radiology (FSAR). He currently serves as Portfolio Director for Internal and External Relations at the Society of Abdominal Radiology (SAR), was the former chair of the RSNA Genitourinary Scientific Program Committee, and contributes to the ARRS International Relations Committee. Through ongoing collaborations with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, the Institute for Prostate Cancer Research, and colleagues across radiology, urology, radiation oncology, and oncology at the University of Washington, he continues to advance clinical and research efforts in abdominal and genitourinary imaging.
