Dr. Antonia Stang serves as Head of the Department of Pediatrics and Associate Professor in the Departments of Pediatrics, Community Health Sciences, and Emergency Medicine at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary. She is also Section Head of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Alberta Children's Hospital and a Child Health & Wellness Researcher at the Alberta Children's Hospital Research Institute. Stang obtained a B.Sc. in Psychology (Honours) from Brown University in 1995, a Doctor of Medicine and an M.B.A. from McGill University in 2001, and an M.Sc. in Clinical Epidemiology from McGill University. She completed her medical degree and pediatric residency at McGill University. Joining Alberta Health Services and the University of Calgary in 2008, she held the position of Assistant Dean, Physician Learning Program, CME and Professional Development from 2017 to 2018, before assuming the role of Section Chief, Pediatric Emergency Medicine in 2018. Effective May 1, 2022, she was appointed the academic and clinical head of the Department of Pediatrics.
Stang's research specializations encompass paediatric emergency medicine, quality improvement and patient safety, health services research, performance measurement and metric development, emergency department efficiency and flow, health outcomes, pain management, head injury, and mental health. She is actively involved with the Pediatric Emergency Research Team (PERT) and contributes to studies on topics such as bronchiolitis care, analgesia for musculoskeletal injuries, and pediatric mental health in emergency settings. Her scholarly output includes over 70 publications, with key works such as "Adverse events in the paediatric emergency department: a prospective cohort study" (2020), "Group-facilitated audit and feedback to improve bronchiolitis care in the emergency department" (2020), "Study protocol for two complementary trials of non-steroidal or opioid analgesia use for children aged 6 to 17 years with musculoskeletal injuries (the No OUCH study)" (2020), "Safety of corticosteroids in young children with acute respiratory conditions: a systematic review and meta-analysis" (2019), and "Recommendations for enhancing collaboration between the Canadian emergency department quality improvement and research communities" (2021). Stang has earned numerous awards for her contributions to innovation and quality improvement in pediatric care.
