Dr. Ans Vercammen is a Senior Lecturer in the Curtin School of Population Health, Faculty of Health Sciences, at Curtin University, where she joined in 2024. She earned a Master's Degree in Experimental and Theoretical Psychology from Ghent University in 2005 and a PhD in Cognitive and Behavioural Neuroscience from the University of Groningen in 2009. An interdisciplinary researcher, Vercammen has extensive experience in experimental psychology and neuroscience, transitioning to environmental and conservation science. Her research interests center on the human dimensions of environmental change, climate change and mental health, and conservation psychology. Previously, she served as Senior Research Fellow at the University of Queensland from January 2022 to December 2023, Research Associate at Imperial College London, and contributed to projects at the University of Melbourne, including the repliCATS initiative on replicability in social and behavioural sciences.
Vercammen's scholarship has garnered over 4,000 citations, reflecting her influence in understanding psychological responses to environmental challenges. Key publications include 'Psychological impacts of climate change on US youth' (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2025), 'Climate anxiety, coping strategies and planning for the future in environmental degree students in the UK' (Frontiers in Psychology, 2023), 'Psycho-social factors associated with climate distress, hope and behavioural intentions in young UK residents' (PLOS Global Public Health, 2023), and earlier contributions such as 'Auditory Hallucinations in Schizophrenia and Nonschizophrenia Populations' (Schizophrenia Bulletin, 2012). She guest-edited a special issue on trends and future directions in conservation social sciences for Conservation Biology (2025) and serves as an At-Large Member on the Board of Directors for the Society for Conservation Biology's Social Science Section. At the University of Melbourne, she received a joint Award for Excellence in Interdisciplinary Research. Vercammen also supervises PhD projects and coordinates units in psychology at Curtin University.
