Anne Estapa is an Associate Professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning at the University of Iowa College of Education, specializing in mathematics education. She holds a B.A. in Elementary Education and an M.A. in Education from the University of Northern Iowa, and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction, Mathematics Education, from the University of Missouri. Before joining the University of Iowa in 2018 as an Assistant Professor, Estapa was an Assistant Professor at Iowa State University, where she earned the Early Achievement in Outreach Award.
Her research interests include pre-service teacher learning, professional noticing in mathematics education, the use of innovative technologies such as animations, virtual reality, and video-recording glasses in teacher training, integrated STEM education, engineering design in elementary classrooms, computational thinking, responsive teaching in self-regulated mathematics environments, and teacher-student interactions. Notable publications are "Supporting integrated STEM in the elementary classroom: a feasibility study of an elementary virtual STEM lab" (Estapa & Tank, International Journal of STEM Education, 2017), "An Automated Virtual Reality Training System for Teacher-Student Interaction: A Randomized Controlled Trial" (King et al., JMIR Serious Games, 2022), "Elementary Teachers’ Approach to Responsive Teaching in a Self-Regulated Mathematics Environment" (Estapa et al., Contemporary Issues in Technology and Teacher Education, 2022), "A Qualitative Metasynthesis of Video-based Prompts and Noticing in Mathematics Education" (Estapa & Amador, ZDM, 2021), and "Wearable Cameras as a Tool to Capture Preservice Teachers' Marked and Recorded Noticing" (Estapa & Amador, Journal of Technology and Teacher Education, 2016). With over 1,000 citations from 29 publications, her work has influenced teacher education practices. Estapa received the University of Iowa Innovations in Teaching with Technology Award in 2020 ($21,900) for developing simulated teaching experiences in elementary mathematics methods courses. She serves on the Faculty Advisory Committee and Faculty Senate (2020-2026), belongs to the Iowa Association of Mathematics Teacher Education, and was the faculty speaker at the College of Education's Spring 2024 commencement.
