About Anita

Associate Professor Anita Horvath serves in the Department of Medical Education within the Melbourne Medical School at the University of Melbourne, part of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences. She holds a PhD from Monash University, a Postgraduate Certificate from the University of Melbourne, and a Bachelor of Science with Honours in Biochemistry from the University of Melbourne. Her academic career at the University of Melbourne exceeds 12 years, during which she advanced from Senior Lecturer, serving as Academic Course Lead from 2013 to 2022, to her current position as Associate Professor. Prior to this, she held research positions at Monash University. Horvath's expertise spans life sciences, biomedicine, science and technology, hematology, and biological sciences. She leads the Master of Clinical Research graduate program, having taught it for nine years, and focuses on clinical research training and transnational education.

As Academic Lead for the Partnership in Research Indonesia and Melbourne (PRIME-Health) programs, Horvath coordinates collaborations between the University of Melbourne and Indonesian institutions including the University of Indonesia, Gadjah Mada University, and the University of Airlangga. These partnerships advance research in primary health care, health systems, infectious diseases, and adolescent health across clusters such as Primary Care, Infectious Disease, Adolescent Health, and Health Services. Within medical education research, she contributes to groups studying curriculum development, assessment and evaluation, progress testing, clinical assessment, feedback for learning, diagnostic reasoning, and student wellbeing. She received the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences Award for Excellence in Internationalisation in 2020. Her scholarly output includes early biochemical research such as 'The X-ray crystal structure of full-length human plasminogen' (Cell Reports, 2012), 'Serine protease inhibitors serpina1 and serpina3 are down-regulated in bone marrow during hematopoietic progenitor mobilization' (Journal of Experimental Medicine, 2005), and 'Isolation and characterization of a novel inducible mammalian galectin' (Journal of Biological Chemistry, 2000). Recent works feature 'The effectiveness of interventions designed to enhance and maintain medical student wellbeing: a systematic review' (2026), 'Measuring functional recovery in somatic symptom and related disorders: a scoping review', and ''Touch for Health' based kinesiology interventions' (2022). Horvath's contributions bridge foundational biomedical research with innovative medical education and international health partnerships.
