About Anilkumar

Anil Kumar Devara is an Assistant Research Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar, a position he has held since May 2025. Previously, he served as a Temporary Assistant Professor in the Department of Archaeology and Ancient History at the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. Devara obtained his PhD in 2024 from the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, an MA in 2016 from the same institution, and a BA in 2013 from Acharya Nagarjuna University. His research centers on Palaeolithic archaeology, encompassing field archaeology, luminescence chronology, palaeoenvironmental reconstructions, palaeontology, and lithic technology, with particular emphasis on sites in the Gundlakamma River basin and other areas of Andhra Pradesh, India.

Devara's publications include 'Youngest Toba Tuff deposits in the Gundlakamma River basin, Andhra Pradesh, India and their role in evaluating late Pleistocene behavioral change in South Asia' (Quaternary Research, 2023), 'Diversity of MIS 3 Levallois technology from Motravulapadu, southern India' (Frontiers in Earth Science, 2023), 'Palaeolithic assemblages associated with Youngest Toba Tuff deposits from the upper Gundlakamma River basin, Andhra Pradesh, India' (Geological Society, London, Special Publications, 2022), and 'Deep-rooted Indian Middle Palaeolithic: Terminal Middle Pleistocene lithic assemblage from Retlapalle, Andhra Pradesh, India' (2024). He has been awarded the UGC NET JRF (2017), National Geographic Society Doctoral Research Award (2017), Nehru Trust Short Term Study and Research Grant, and Leakey Foundation Research Grant (approved 2022) for investigating fossil beds at Motravulapadu. Devara delivered the lecture 'Marker or Misreading? The Curious Case of the Youngest Toba Tuff in South Asia' at IIT Gandhinagar in 2025 and organized a hands-on workshop on lithic use-wear analysis. He also contributes to the Cuddapah Basin Palaeanthropology Field School.
