Ángel Gullón-Rivera is an Associate Professor of Family Science in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences within Western Michigan University's College of Education and Human Development. He serves as the Program Coordinator for the Youth and Community Development concentration in the Family Science and Human Development major and is affiliated with graduate programs in early childhood general and special education. Dr. Gullón-Rivera holds a Ph.D. and is a Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE). His career at Western Michigan University includes prior service as an assistant professor, contributing to the department's offerings in family dynamics, human growth and development, parent education, and family resource management.
Dr. Gullón-Rivera's research focuses on family resilience, social support, child attachment and self-worth, sibling experiences in medical settings, parent training for social competence in children with autism spectrum disorder, and strengths among Latino immigrant families. Notable publications include 'Puerto Rican kindergartners' self-worth as coded from the Attachment Q-Sort' (Attachment & Human Development, 2013), 'Training Parents to Create and Implement Social Stories to Improve Social Communication for Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder' (Family Relations, 2019), 'Supporting Siblings of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Patients: A Thematic Analysis of Sibling Experiences' (Pediatric Nursing, 2017), and 'The Strengths of Recent Latino Immigrant Parents Raising Preschool-Age Children in the United States' (Journal of Family Social Work, 2016). He has co-authored on family resilience among sojourning Japanese mothers (Family and Consumer Sciences Research Journal, 2018) and dietary quality among pregnant women in nutrition programs (International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, 2021). As co-managing editor of GrandFamilies: The Contemporary Journal of Research, Practice and Policy, hosted by WMU ScholarWorks, he has helped publish 61 peer-reviewed articles over ten years, with content downloaded in 166 countries and accessed by over 50,000 users from 2,700 institutions. He chaired the 2024 doctoral dissertation 'The Development of Youth Voice in a Community-Based Social Action Program' and served on dissertation committees for works on family resilience and intimate partner violence impacts. Dr. Gullón-Rivera has delivered public lectures on Puerto Rican culture during Hispanic Heritage Month and international student experiences at WMU.
